WALKMAN SPORTS SONY ©️ SEB - Sebastien Alouf

Sebastien Alouf, aka Sebal, loves humble materials. He works with cardboard and tin, wool and wire. The scenes he assembles from them are cheerful, playful, and disarmingly naïve. And even though they’re rough around the edges, they are made with great care and devotion.

Sebal’s DIY universe is the opposite of the slick, polished perfection that’s paraded before us today. For him, an exhibition isn’t a marketplace where art is consumed — it’s more like an amusement park.

As a visitor, you go there to have fun and to catch the artist’s creative spark. Even those who buy nothing will hopefully take some of that spirit home — so that, once back, you might rummage through the paper bin or recycling bag, grab the wire cutters and craft knife, and invite your astonished housemates: I’ve got an idea — want to join?

Rarely has the cliché “my kid could do that” been more fitting than with the art of Sebal. Because that’s exactly the point.

Amusement Park 2610–2112.
